What’s it like living in West Coast SA?

South Australia's west coast is defined by the Yorke and Eyre Peninsula's which stretch out into the Southern Ocean and the sweeping Great Australian Bight, a marine paradise that makes up the far-west coast.

The Yorke Peninsula features many country towns, each with their own ocean views and unique histories. In fact, many of the towns in the region feature museums related to copper mining, and combined have come to be known as the copper coast. The Eyre Peninsula is home to a large agricultural population, with seaside towns having a strong focus on the fishing industry.

The largest city in the West Coast area, Port Lincoln, claims to be the seafood capital of Australia, with the whole coastline benefiting from cold nutrient-rich waters that support large fish populations. The region is plentiful in whiting, tuna and sardines, and the nearby Ceduna offers a yearly oyster festival. For those that like their fish a little bigger, Port Lincoln also provides cage diving experiences where you can come face to face with a Great White Shark.

The Great Australian Bight scoops out the next length of the West Coast. The area continues the oceanic-wildlife theme with large marine reserves that serve as a breeding area for sea lions and the endangered Southern Right Whale. The Nullabor Plain sprawls out the to the South-West of the state, a 1100 km stretch that holds the title for the world’s largest area of exposed limestone bedrock.

The plane, which borders the Great Victoria Desert is flat, barren and extremely dry, but epitomises outback Australia. It just goes to show the extreme variability in South Australia - from the countries most abundant food source to its longest stretch of dust.
