Egress

Egress originates from the Latin word meaning ‘going out’.

What is an egress?

Egress originates from the Latin word meaning ‘going out’. It essentially means an exit or means of leaving a property. This can include things such as a door or windows. It can also be used as a verb as the act of exiting.

Why are there egress requirements and standards?

Egress requirements and standards ensure all patrons of a building can get out quickly and safely during emergencies. These standards tell us how many doors and windows there should be, as well as their dimension to create easy exit paths.

Following these standards  can prevent people from getting stuck inside buildings in events such as fires. These guidelines also consider everyone's needs, like those with disabilities, and help emergency responders plan.

How is egress different from ingress?

In simple terms, egress and ingress are opposites when it comes to movement in and out of a place. Egress is about exiting or leaving, like going out of a building through a door. On the other hand, ingress is about entering or coming in, like walking into a room through a doorway.
