Crown Land

Crown land refers to land owned and managed by the government or the monarch.

What is crown land?

Crown land refers to land owned and managed by the government or the monarch. It is land that is not privately owned and is instead used to serve public interests, environmental conservation, or specific community needs.

What type of land types can be considered crown land?

Crown land encompasses various land categories, including:

  • Lands under lease, licence, or permit from the Crown
  • Community-managed reserves
  • Publicly-owned lands preserved for environmental purposes
  • Lands integrated into the Crown public roads network
  • Other unallocated lands.

Can crown land be leased?

Yes, crown land can be leased by the government for various purposes such as basic residential purposes for everyday citizens. This is commonly seen in cities such as Canberra, where significant portions of land are categorised as crown land.

While you cannot exactly own the land itself, you can buy a residential lease which grants the right to use and enjoy land for the length of the lease (99 years), similar to if you were to buy the property with the intention of dwelling in it.
