What's it like living in Sydney's St George area?


St George refers to a group of suburbs in Sydney's South, generally between 12 and 17 kilometres of Sydney CBD. The area encompasses the Georges River Council and a section of the Bayside Council. The major suburbs in the area are Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale, with an estimated combined population of over 260,000.

St George was originally home to three groups of Indigenous Australian's the Gweagal, Bidjigal and Cadigal tribes. The area was directly inland from Botany Bay, where the First Fleet landed. However, the soil was not suitable for farming. Early settlers soon found that the area between Cooks River and Georges River contained dense forest, and soon attracted timber cutters, sawyers and charcoal burners to the area, which supplied much of Sydney's early timber needs.

St George is considered to be one of the most multicultural places in Sydney, with many Asian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern cultures calling the area home. Hurstville, the largest commercial area in the region, is often referred to as the 'the real Chinatown' of Sydney, due to the large number of residents with Chinese heratige who have contributed towards many specialty stores and small businesses, as well as authentic and delicious restaurants. The region is experiencing a significant number of developments within the major centres, including the Hurstville Central Plaza which will provide a civic space between the two major department stores and the Hurstville transport interchange. Large commercial areas and shopping plazas also exist within Rockdale and Kogarah.

The benefit of the St George area is that many of the regions major centres lie within a half hour commute to the city along the Illawarra line. The region still provides affordable brick and double brick houses as well as older large family homes.
